Quick answer
The short version
Use perforated vinyl when you want a full-color graphic on the glass and still need to see out during the day. Use solid printed vinyl when you want to hide what's behind the glass. Use cut lettering for your name, phone and hours, and frosted film when you need privacy but want to keep the light.
Side-by-side comparison

Things perforated film doesn't do
Perforated film is printed on vinyl full of tiny holes. Your eye focuses on the bright outside world, so from inside the graphic mostly disappears during the day. Two limits matter: at night the effect reverses when the room is lit, and rain sitting in the holes blurs the view until it dries. It also makes the inside a little darker.
Fine detail and small text don't read as sharply on perf as on solid vinyl, because part of every letter is a hole. Keep text large and high-contrast.

Questions
Common questions
+ Does perforated window film give privacy?
No. Perforated film lets people inside see out during the day, but it is not a privacy film. At night, when the inside is lit, people outside can see in through the holes. Use frosted film or solid vinyl when privacy matters.
+ Can I see out through solid printed vinyl?
No. Solid printed vinyl is opaque. It blocks the view in both directions, which is useful for back rooms, storage areas or a display backdrop, but it also blocks daylight from that part of the glass.
+ Which window film should I use for my business name and hours?
Cut vinyl lettering. The letters are cut from solid-color vinyl and applied with clear glass around them, so the window stays open and the name reads cleanly from the street.
+ What do you need to quote window graphics?
A straight-on photo of the storefront, the width and height of each pane, your logo, how much of the glass you want covered, the installation city and your deadline.
